Join us for a conversation with Cheuk Kwan, director and producer of the 15 part documentary series, “Chinese Restaurants” on YouTube and author of “Have You Eaten Yet?” a book inspired by his series. Before Anthony Bourdain’s “A Cook’s Tour”, there was Cheuk Kwan’s, “Chinese Restaurants.” He traveled for 4 years to unexpected places in the world of the Chinese diaspora.
Cheuk will share the stories of Chinese immigrants found in unexpected places in the world. From the Amazon River in Brazil to Israel; to Norway, the land of the midnight sun and one of the few Chinese restaurants within the Arctic Circle; to Cape Town’s first Chinese restaurant to the oldest one in Istanbul. Running a restaurant is the easiest path for the Chinese immigrants to integrate into a new community and get on their feet. Through the lens of food, they shared their stories with Cheuk – stories of courage, survival and hope. Each story is unique and at the same time, very familiar to our own immigrant story.
We will also have a drawing for 3 signed books at the end of the webinar. Winner must be present.

Cheuk Kwan was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. He has lived in the US, Canada and Saudi Arabia. He speaks English, Japanese, French and several Chinese dialects. Kwan is a writer and filmmaker who co-founded a magazine, The Asianadian, and a film production company, Tissa Films. He loves and appreciates food, culture and travel. His new book, “Have You Eaten Yet: Stories from Chinese Restaurants Around the World,” weaves together these themes.
